One of my all time favorite speech ever made by anybody is the I have a dream speech by Martin Luther King. The words are profound because it motivated an entire nation to stand up for their rights and the rights of those not fortunate enough to receive equality as Americans. His speech is influential not just to Americans but people from all over the world. His words should remind us the danger of becoming too comfortable and lackadaisal when it comes to protecting our freedom and our rights. Also, the words should inspire all of us to fight for the rights of others no matter what their color, sexual orientation, age, or religion. Nobody should have to tell or remind us to fight against injustice. We should do it because we know it is the right thing to do. The next time you see someone being discriminated against, do not take the easy way out by turning your back. Fighting for justice is an honorable endeavor and I do not mean you have to physically get into a fist fight with someone to stand up for others. Use nonviolent means to achieve your goal.

Just like in the 08 election, there is obviously still some inequality in today’s society. Some people really do see people equally, but others, wether because of the way they were raised, or because of prior experiences, create prejeduices, sometimes subconcious ones.
We all have comfort zones, and for many, when someone looks, acts, or dresses outside of this comfort, we kind of pull back. Again, this isn’t true for every single person, but for the most part, it definately is. Once someone threatens to challenge our comfort zone, we retreat, or retaliate, which is pretty much discrimination.
Like I said before, there really is no way around racism and sexism, keep it to yourself if you really feel a certain way, but I guess I kind of believe you have to get to know someone that you are biased against to break that bias… if that makes sense. In any case, bias is something that is very prevelant in today’s society, even though most people will try and deny it… everyone has thoughts against vertain people, and anyway you look at that, its a prejeduice, because you have some reason for not liking them…sometimes its a real reason, sometimes its trivial, but I really think it’s a hard thing to blot out completely.
