| - In WW1, Germany was funding Lenin’s campaign so Russia would enter a revolution and thus leave the war.
- The US entered WW1 because Germany sent a note to Mexico (that was intercepted) saying they would help Mexico get some original American land back (meaning they would declare war on the United States) if they helped Germany in WW1. - In WW1, Germany recruited black Americans into the Mexican army. (Black Americans in that time opposed America at war, majorly.) - In WW1, American military leaders wore French gas masks because the American designs (which the millions of soldiers had to wear) were fatally flawed in some cases. |

These are very interesting facts about WW I concerning the United States. First the motive why the U. S. entered the war. The treat of germany gaining mexico on their side was enough to bring the U. S. into the war? I wonder if there were any other reasons for entering since we have been discussing the real motives for the U. S. to engage in wars. Another interesting fact is the role the African Americans played in this war and how some resolved thier opposition of the U.S. at war by basicaly betraying thier country and joining the Mexican Army. Yet another stricking fact is the fact that the government led by president Wilson spyed on thier own citizens. This further more tells us the difficult tasks the government of this nation is facing now……it has to fight other nations and keep control of their own.
Interesting facts indeed. Well, I believe that the reason why America went into war was because yeah, Germany could possibly gain Mexico on it’s side and that is a bad thing since Mexico is right next to America. America felt insecure and acted with hostility. Another reason though is that Germany was infringing on America. According to the Monroe Doctrine, the Western Hemisphere was closed to any further colonization and interference by European powers. Going to war was just a way to show that they meant what they had said. Also, if Germany gained Mexico, who was to stop them from gaining more territory in the Western Hemisphere?
I find that stupid that African American’s responded to the U.S’s going to war by going to war under Mexican command. It doesn’t make sense and it is hypocritical. You don’t counter war by going to war. Maybe they did it because they weren’t so sure if America could succeed in war. Maybe they were in a way trying to get back at America for the way it had been treating it’s black citizens. Still, I don’t see the logic behind their actions.
As for the thing about American military leaders wearing French gas masks, that is so unpatriotic and it is wrong that they only used it on themselves instead of at least buying more for all of their soldiers. America is one of the greatest industrial countries in the world, how could they have to rely on products from another country? And the thing is that that’s how it still is today!! Just recently the Pentagon announced that it will award EADS the contract to build the next generation of air-refueling tanker aircraft rather than give it to Boeing, the U.S aircraft manufacturing company. It’s the same thing. Wow, France must be really good at making weapons!
Finally, about the government spying on the citizens, it just goes to show you that privacy and freedom only goes so far. However, although it is a total invasion of privacy, this needs to be done in order to gain security. The government needs to monitor it’s people so things don’t get out of hand; in a way all he was doing was getting our straight opinion without us knowing. Hopefully though, our government won’t ever take it as far as becoming into something like Big Brother. That is not how America rolls!
I’m going to go in order-
for the first fact, it was a very strategic move on Germany’s part, but it really was something that Russia should’ve seen through. To be completely honest, I’m not sure how Russia fit into the entire WWI ordeal, but if their involvement was so crucial that Germany was willing to pay (was it covertly?) then they had obviously invested a lot into that, and they were most likely a critical component in it.
The second fact, I’m kind of confused. Why was Germany recruiting Americans (whatever color) into the MEXICAn army? That really doesn’t make sense to me…. perhaps because I don’t know the stances of each country, and therefore the alliances…
With the gas masks…. I think it is ridiculous. I believe that it is a fact, but I think it is ridiculous the the Americans KNEW their masks were defective… and didn’t fix them? Again, not to clear as to wether only gov. officials wore the french masks, or if the entire army…. In any case America obviously recognized the flaw, and should have fixed the,. Knowingly giving them to the soldiers….(if that in fact happened) is like… a death sentence. It’s sad. I don’t agree with Fernando on the fact that it’s unpatriotic… You use what you can, what works in a time of need…but I do agree that as America… we are, or should be, advanced and industrialized enough to fix that problem, and not have to rely on other countries.
The last fact, about the espionage, was one that I had previously heard. I know that in certain cases throughout history, this tactic has been used, in order to find trators, or people who have committed treason… and I understand that… but it seems like the government could have invested their money in better ways, then to spy on the general public,as opposed to key individuals who have given reason.
3 facts you might not gave known….
—The first women to serve in the military in an actual branch of service were World War One yeomanettes in the US Navy. They were formally designated women (F) for female.
—During the summer and fall of 1914, France lost as many men and women on the battlefield as the U.S.Army lost in all of the 20th century!
—Jeannette Rankin (June 11, 1880 – May 18, 1973) was the first woman elected to the United States House of Representatives. A lifelong pacifist, she was the only member of Congress to vote against United States entry in both World War I and World War II. She also led resistance to the Vietnam War.
Those are Interesting facts. Especially the reason why America joined. I always thought we joined because Germany sank a passenger ship, the Lusitania killing around 128 Americans.
Oh no she didnt!!! *snap* *snap*! But yeah, it’s true, you use what you can. And also, that thing about Germany recruiting black Americans into the Mexican army confused me a little too. I think though that they were being recruited into the Mexican army because Mexico is right next to America. Didnt matter what army they were recruited in because they were are all on the same side. (Germany planned on having Mexico on its side.)
My first comment didn’t get put up….Videos like that, which show us the grit and grime of warfare are great for sending a message. Simply because they put everything out there in black and white, leaving no gray area for :how do I know if it’s true If I wasn’t there?, or why do people come back all different ? The visual of watch the video plus the commentary from the narrorator equals, for most people a good understanding of what happened during that point in time for people to be and or act the way they did.
Correct me if I’m wrong and I very well may be…but wasnt Russia just coming out of the Revolution that overthrew the Czars? Why would any country enter another revolution after exiting one? Sheesh! Give yourself some time to grow some food and get your life back on track before mass chaos consumes your country yet again…Bravo to Germany though. They did gain big mother Russia as an ally in WWII. And who wants to fight Russia? Did anyone learn anything from Napoleon?!?!? A land war in the middle of winter. Good call buddy. Good call.
So if I understand this correctly, Germany was eager to get Mexico on their side to lay siege on America to win back California Arizona New Mexico and Texas? What the heck were they thinking? By the time WWI hit the country had recovered from the Civil War who were they fooling trying to make Mexico believe they would win? And for goodness sakes does anyone remember the Monroe Doctrine? Europe didn’t have any power over America. What the heck was Germany thinking? It’s a good freaking thing the message was intercepted? Am I correct to believe it was intercepted by America?
As to the recruiting of American’s to the Mexican army…what self respecting American Citizen would go to war against their country while still claiming citizenship? I mean even the confederates had the decency to create a new country before declaring war. Come on people does anyone think anymore?
As to the gas masks, that totally doesnt surprise me. IF you look back at the Civil War most Union Soldiers didnt even have blankets, or shoes. If anyone has seen All Quiet on the Western Front they would already know this. America really had no business being involved in the first world war they were ill equipped compared to european nations. I do however agree with Trish. If they knew the gas masks didn’t work why the heck were they still using them?
Ah the Espionage Act. The Nick Jr of MCarthyism. It’s human nature to spy. We eavesdrop on people who talk too loud, we listen in when we hear something interesting, our ears prick up when we hear people whisper. It begins with a paranoia but after hearing that Mexico was recruiting Americans for their army the whole country had to be a basket case. It’s like a witch hunt really. In theory it was a good idea, until people used it for vengence and pretty soon it was an all out hunt for those sneaky people who were communicating with Germany, your neighbor that borrowed an egg and didn’t bring one in return? He was absolutely talking to Germany. That couple with the noisy kids that don’t keep their lawn looking neat, they were German spies. We did it with the Prohabition. Speakeasys with rats. No more speakeasys. It gave the Mafia something to do to pass the time. They did the same thing with American Communists. The FBI under the direction of J Edgar Hoover wire tapped on the whole country. How do you think Watergate was blown out of the water…ding ding ding wiretapping…hello FCC.
these facts are very helpful.
