Extra Credit: Changing Role of Women in Society

This week we discussed the changing role of women in our society today from the twenties to the modern time. We talked about the progress women have made politically, socially, and economically. To a certain extent we have come to a consensus that American women has been actively involve in changing their role in society throughout history. Some argued that women can do the same job as a man. In other words some of you believe that a woman is as as capable as a man. However, some of you have also caution that we still have a long ways to go when it comes to the way women are viewed in society.

Do you think this presidential election epitomizes the struggle for women’s rights and recognition in our society? Is Hillary Clinton a good example of the strides women have made in their attempt to break down social and political barriers? Is she a good example of a strong woman? Why or Why not? Do you think she is as good as a man when it comes to politics? If she is able to win the democratic nomination, will she be able to beat McCain? If she becomes the first woman president in the United States, what will this prove?

  1. I THINK IT SHOWCASES A LITTLE ABOUT WOMENS STRUGGLE TO BE JUST AS POWERFUL AS A MAN. BUT I DONT SEE HILLARY AS ONE OF THE MAIN EXAMPLE OF TODAY’S MODERN WOMAN. THATS WHY I THINK PEOPLE CRITICIZE HILLARY AND DONT ACCEPT HER. ITS THAT SHE DOESNT REPRESENT THE AVERAGE AMERICAN FEMALE. SHE COULDNT RELATE TO THE TRUE STRUGGLES OF TODAYS MODERN WOMAN.I THINK SHE IS AN OKAY EXAMPLE, BUT SOMETIMES I QUESTION HOW SHE GOT INTO THE GOVERNMENT.WE HAVE TO ASK OURSELVES IS IT BECAUSE OF HER LAST NAME THAT SHE IS IN THE GOVERNMENT OR BECAUSE OF HER SKILL AND HER WILL TO WORK HER WAY UP. I DONT THINK SHE IS THE GREATEST EXAMPLE. BUT ONE OF HER MAJOR FEATS WAS RECOVERING AND KEEPING COMPOSURE IN HER HUSBANDS SCANDAL.ALSO UNDER ALL THE ATTACKS FROM THE PRESS AND OBAMA SHE HAS KEPT STEAD STRONG AND FAST, BUT DOES SHE KNOW AND UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENS IN AVERAGE DAY AMERICA. I DONT THINK SO. SO I THINK SHE IS STRONG BUT NOT STRONG ENOUGH.POLITICS ISNT ABOUT MAN OR WOMAN ITS ABOUT LOGIC,MORALS, AND PRECISE THINKING. SO YEAH I THINK SHE COULD BE JUST AS GOOD AS A MAN. I DONT THINK SHE WILL BE MCCAIN I THINK HE HAS MORE KNOWLEDGE,EXPERIENCE, AND KNOWS WHAT WORKS AND DOESNT ALSO HE REPRESENTS SO MUCH STRENGTH TO PEOPLE THAT I THINK THEY WOULD CHOOSE MCCAIN.
IF SHE BECOMES THE FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT THIS WILL PROVE THAT AMERICA IS WHAT IT REALLY SAYS IT IS. THE LAND OF ENDLESS POSSIBLITLYS AND THAT ANYONE MAN OR WOMAN CAN REACH THEIR DREAMS AND LEAD EXAMPLE IN THE NEW WORLD.THIS WILL ALSO GIVE INSPIRATION THAT IF A WOMAN COULD DO IT SO COULD OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS.THIS WILL LEAD TO MORE OPEN MINDED THINKING AND A TRUE UNION OF THE WORLD RACES UNDER OUR FLAG!

  2. Yes I think this presidential election epitomizes the struggle for women’s rights. Yes and no. For the democratic party yes she is a good example of how far women have came social and political and a good example of a strong women, because she has the same thoughts as them. But for republicans she is not a good example of how far women have come, because they don’t have the same thoughts as her and some don’t like her at all so they do want to think of her as a good example. Yes I think she is as good as a man when it comes to politics. I don’t know if she will be able to beat McCain or not. From what I learned for the radio is if Hillary wins the democratic nomination that all the people that wanted Obama to win will go and vote for McCain. But we will see when it comes. If she becomes the first women president it will show that women can do anything.

  3. OKKKK….

well i think that this election just by itself shows alot of change in america…and not just in hilary’s case.. even though i do agree thatthis presidential election epitomizes the struggle for women’s rights and recognition in our society..if she wins or not…its still a big change, just the fact that a women is running for president makes you realize how far we’ve gone with that little issue…. i think that hillary wants to be a good example for everyone..but in my opinion she’s not… yeah i think she is as good as a man..iam pretty sure any women can be as good as a man…sex don’t matter whats important its how they really are…how well they know their stuff… and how they use it..i think that if she wins it will finally be prove that women have no limits that we all have the same opportunities no matter what and that a women with dreams can get wherever they want…

  4. Women could do anything men could do and that has been proven many times in history. But there are some that can’t. But just because a few can’t doesnt mean that all women are the same. In my opinion i believe that Clinton wouldnt be a good president. She is capable to doing what men could do but the thing is that she gets her emotions in the way. In one of the debates she started crying, if she started crying over a debate imagine once she becomes president. I wouldnt be surprise she did that to make people sorry for her and vote for her but that right there shows that she is not capable of running a country. Her husband might have been president once giving her the experience but still that doesnt make her the perfect canidate to run for president. It would be nice to have a women as a president. That will show that women can do anything men could do. Who know maybe even better than what men could do.

  5. I do believe that this election does reflect the struggle women have oversome but it also shows how far we still have to go. Yes, we have come a far way from what we were before. We have so many more opportunities offered to us and have much more respect that fomr before. Unfortunately, the way women see themselves, needs more improvement. Because women were so suppressed, they seem to want as much retribution as possible. This is yet another issue shown through this election. Though Hillary does have a lot of views that are backed up from a lot of people, you would be baffled by how many women and even men have said-”Can you imagine what this would do for future women in society?” Or -”This will bring us one step closer to complete equallity.” Yes, this all moght be true but that shouldn’t matter that is an issue with our women in society that needs to be dealt with outside of the office so it does not jeapordize our country as a whole. In all I do believe the women of our society have come very far but some not so much. Women disrespect themselves and make a fool of themselves for what? “I have the right to express myself through my clothing.” they say but all they’re doing is making a fool of themselves and the women who fought for our freedom to do just that.

  6. Woman’s rights have change alot through out the years, but that does not mean that woman are totally ready for this kind of change. As the girl that Im, i consider my self too week for certain things that I know they’re for men, and with Hillary as runner for future president, is just an illusion that woman have as to see ourself more than men and to show them that we can do alot of things better than them. In other words, I don’t think that the country is ready for a girl as president because grls are meant to be wifes, friends. mothers, but not the leader of a country. Girls are too sensible and dont know how to act when it comes to violence or organizing a war, that is the last thing that a girl would want and the first option for the oponent. If Hillary gets to be the president (which I see almost imposible) it would prove that woman are willing to do their best just to show men that they can do the same things as them. :)

  7. Hillary Clinton is a powerful person. Not just in terms of money power but in political power. I think what she is doing is something powerful. She not only is doing what no one has done, she is doing it good. She is trying to be president and I think she will do good againt McCain. I know alot of people will say that she will get alot of votes because she is a woman but you could also say the same thing for McCain. Another thing, I think she is as powerful as a “man.” Male and Female doesn’t matter in politics as that is the exterior of a person and the exterior doesn’t talk, the interior does. I think that if she does win president,I guess it will prove that she CAN do it.

  8. I think Hillary Clinton is a great example of the strides women have made to gain equal rights, like men have. I think she is a strong woman, she has showed this by not dropping out of the democratic nomination. She has been attacked by many but has never lost her consentration on winning the democratic nomination and then the presidential election. I think that even if she wins the democratic nomination she will not win the presidential election. There are still many people who do not see a woman as running the country. She might be a better candidate but the simple fact she is a woman will not let her win. If she manages to win the election she will prove that a woman can run this country.

  9. In a way, Hillary Clinton is kind of a big role model in today’s society due to the fact that she is the first female to ever run for president. Yes, I will say that that is a big risk and a big way of saying that women can do anything in this world not just men, but I personally think she will not make a good president. Now I am a female myself and I am even saying that she should not be elected president. In my opinion, I do not really think that she can handle the job. Most people say that due to her past dealing with her husband’s affairs that she took him back. I don’t think that is the case, I just believe that she can accomplish much. But since women were able to vote, life has been ok and more acceptable towards women. But I do believe that women can do anything they want to. WOMEN RUUULLLEEEE!!!!! :)

  10. While inequality still exists between man and woman. When we are going from a general idea to a more specific situation as politics the perspective receives a new look. We as a nation have mainly evolved passed race and gender towards a more beneficial resolution. Where we want to elect the most capable candidate in order to establish a new form of government that in time will undo the mistakes and damage that’s come to be.

Hillary Clinton. Has sparked and more to a point solidified that ideal that women are now as capable as men. Extending that to a point where it’s now emerging that women are performing higher then men in areas. To cover points of Hillary Clinton that as an individual she has reached the levels of importance where she is today is indescribable; yet not impossible. An overview of what she has accomplished would be a sense of breaking through a wall of inequality that’s been present for so long. Further observation of her current stance shows that she is lacking the dept of knowledge of all areas needed in politics. Therefore as strong as I am that women are as equal as men. This doesn’t affect the end result that other candidates have a more massive knowledge of overall needed education and study in the field of politics.

  11. Honeslty I don’t think this election shows much for womens rights. Hilary is a strong woman, I guess, for putting up with Bill and everything that happened and for putting herself out there for this election and for not dropping out. Sure she is getting women recognized but is it the way we want to be seen?
I don’t think Hilary is a good example of a strong woman. Women should be independant. Yes, she is strong in a way but is she really independant? I mean after everything that happened with her and Bill she is still with him. She just ignores what happened. Women don’t have to take that. They should be strong enough to leave the man that isn’t good enough for them. I feel that Bill put her up for election but I know if Hilary wan’t with Bill and she really wanted this election she would be able to do it.
Honeslty I think all women are just as capable as a man in everything, but since I haven’t been following this election I don’t know how capable Hilary is. Personaly she wouldn’t be my first choice but I think if she did get elected Bill couldn’t end up any worse than Bush. And yes I said Bill. To me it kinda seems like he put her up to this so he could have another chance at being president.
If she beats McCain I think it means people agree with her opinions more. I don’t think her being a woman would have as great of an effect as we think on the polls. Yes it is a big thing but I think when people start to vote they realize that they are trying to change the country for the better and that it isn’t all about who is the best looking. I think after Bush many people are going to take time to think about what the candidates bring to the table.
I think if Hilary wins it will show that people agree with her more. And that she is willing to go through all the hard times involved with being president. I feel that if she do get elected she could handle just as well as a man could. But really I think it will show America, as well as other countries, that women are just as determined as men. And that we are strong enough to do anything. =]

  12. Hillary Clinton’s campaign in the 2008 elections does in a sense exemplify the progress american women have made. I do not believe that her success is the primary example of women who have broken down social barriers. Of course she has made an impact in history becasue of her political carrier and social service, however it is not only her actions but the possibilty to perform that display the social and political growth women have made. I do think Clinton’s campaign reflects that women are just as capable as men to become successful in any profession, even politics. When it comes to election day and winning over McCain gender should not be a factor, the man or woman most qualified should become president.

  13. First of all in my opinion women will never be equal to me. We will never be equal to them mentally and physically but that is how God made us. He did not intend for us to be seen as the inferior sex but unfortunately we are judged like that. We have been struggling since the beginning of times and we will still be because there is always going to be someone or a group of people who will look down on us. This is not fair but this is reality. All we can do as women is to keep on striving. We need to prove them wrong no matter what it takes. Others do not take in consideration that we are strong because we can now vote, marry whoever we want to, and many have had to provide for their family and at the same time be the father and mother.
This election in a way does prove that we can do whatever man can do but with more effort than men. Hillary is a good example for women because we can related to her. She is being discrimminated against just because she is a women but eventhought she has cried, she has sustained and kept herself in the election. If she does become president I hope she starts working on this country especially since we are in the condition we are. Her victory may or may not prove anything. It depends on the person, personally to me this will prove that her victory is just another example of how we have gotten so far and to others this will just bring controversy.

  14. I believe that in the beginning of the race for president, Hillary being a woman was one of the biggest points. However, it seems that as the race wore on, both men and women began to see her as a candidate for the U.S. presidency rather than “the woman running for president”. Though if it must be said I think that Hillary Clinton is qualified to become the next U.S. president. She has shown intellect and wisdom beyond many other candidates, yes the men, and it is obvious she knows what she is speaking of. However, to the question of what it will prove if she becomes president, the only answer I have to that is this: Hillary Clinton becoming the next U.S. president will only prove that America has finally moved on from its social prejudices and has evolved into a nation whose people look beyond such things, and into what is really important.

  15. I think this election is a good chance for women to prove themselves capable in a male dominated society with Hilary Clinton as Democratic candidate. She has shown that she is able to take the prejudice and sexist comments with calm and patience not quite shown in the male candidates. She is shown to thoroughly think things through before making a comment or decision. I she were to become president which I see as a possibility this will show the world that America, a powerful country, is free and liberal and that we give influence

  16. It is obvious to anyone who is alive today, and has any knowledge of the past that women in our society have furthered their position radically. They have attained equal rights, when just 80 years ago it was unheard of. Tih has come from fighting hard, and was delivered with much hardship.

Hilary Clinton is the quintessential example of this case. A women running for president, to be the leader of the free world, would have benn a hilarious joke to people in the twenties. Even though I dont agree with her stances, I am totally impressed at bravery to be the first women to try and get the nomination.

  17. I actually believe that this election is representing a change in women’s struggle. It is true that Hillary in the presidential election seems different than anything we’ve had in past elections, and she seems to care about the struggle for women’s rights. She is proving that women can be just as powerful as men by running for president and actually getting enough supporters to seem like she is actually bringing forth change. I would also just like to throw this in that I personally believe that Hillary would not make a good president simply because she has been talking bad about Obama throughout the entire campaign. If that’s the way she’s gonna play, I’d rather not have her as president.

  18. Throughout all the struggles women have gone through for equal rights in society, some might argue that all efforts have been epitomized into this 2008 election with the candidacy of female, Hilary Clinton. However, i must argue that this is not, in my opinion, the greatest feat women have accomplished as of yet. I believe that this is just another step for the equality of woman’s privelages.

It is a great thing that a woman of such high political standings has made it this far into the election. However, i do not believe that Hilary Clintion is the right candidate to epitiomize the struggle of women’s rights, nonetheless for the presidency of the United States. I am all for a madame president, but I dont believe that Hilary Clinton will be the best example of what a female president can be.

  19. I personally think that Hillary clinton is a really strong woman and that she has and will produce a lot of changes and that people look up to her as a romedel specially women. I believe that many woman she a change in her that this country needs and she is an example of the woman that has caused a changed. A woman to me will make America look weak in the eyes of the enemy suck irar and all those muslims but here in the United States a woman will be respected and look up to and it shouldnd really matter about gender and about race. I think that she can and will make a difference but she may have to work hard to prove herself. I really think that america has come a long way and that it may be the time to give america a diferent point of view. Im really proud of woman in this country they earn there rights just like man have

  20. Ok i do think that women have come very far in coming up the ladder in the workforce. Yes women can infact do many things a man can as well. But i dont think all roles that men play should be played by women. Ask a woman if she would kill a small child that held a bomb ,and most will say no, and the rest if they actually saw themselves in that situation would completely hesitate, so no women and men dont completely have the same roles.

The struggle of women has shown great progress, its beatiful how we can now do so many things that we couldnt do then, but i dont think hillary enphasizes that, she is infact a strong woman, but i dont think she’s the best candidate. To me, its nothing against her but a woman who is married cannot run her own life. And hillary will have too much influence from her husband (thats what i think) A woman president will happen but i dont think that its hillary.

  21. I believe that today’s presidential elections do emphasize the struggle for womens right and recognition. I also believe that Hilary is a great example of what women always strived for. She is a strong, dependable women who can lead this country out of any social, economic, and international affair our past leader got us into. If she did beat Mcain then it would only prove how much women have come since their days were they were opressed. It wourld also show how much America has change since we became a country.

  22. Women have come along way from where they use to be. Women have always been lower then men in everything they do. Through time they have showed they are as capable as men . Now Hillary Clinton is running for president. She is a strong women by attempting to run for president. However i believe she is not capable of running this country. Her decision making is incompatint for this country. But its good she is showing the improvement women have made thourgh time.

  23. Women have had to go through some hard times to beable to do what men do in society. Since they have gotten the same rights they have done so many different things to help The United States. Hillary has shown what women can do in the U.S. with running for the presidency. She may win the democratic nominee but she will not beable to beat McCain for president. She is not readdy to be president and i dont think she ever will. At this time she would be horrible for the United States, she doesnt want to keep the troops in Iraq. If she were to pull them out right now the Iraqi government would fall, this would be bad for the U.S. A women can be president but not right now due to the war in Iraq. Running for president is a major accomplishment for women but a hillary will not win.

  24. I am a democrat, and, if I would’ve been eligible to vote in the democratic primaries, I would have voted for Senator Obama. However, I still believe that the fact that Hillary Clinton was able to become a top contender in the presidential election of 2008 is the embodiment of the strides women have taken towards equality.
My favoritism for Obama lies in his beliefs, however, if Clinton surpasses him in popularity and goes on to represent the democratic party in the November election, I will still be pleased. She is an excellent example of a strong woman, she truly has done what no woman has ever accomplished.
If she does beat Obama, and even McCain, it will only cement the fact that America has changed significantly in it’s views towards woman.
I hope that if Hillary Clinton does win the democratic nomination, or even becomes President of the United States, that is has nothing to do with her being a woman. I hope she doesn’t win “in spite of” or conversly “because of” being a woman. I hope voters pay attention to her ideas and not her anatomy when casting their votes!!!
